Why we use Direct Debit

When a customer pays through SumUp, SumUp does not allow Beat The Queue to deduct our platform fees from that payment at order time. The customer payment is therefore settled to you separately, and we use Direct Debit to collect the fees you owe us.

By setting up a Direct Debit mandate, you authorise Taste Maps Ltd, the operator of Beat The Queue, to collect these fees from your nominated bank account in accordance with these terms and your merchant pricing agreement.

How and when fees are collected

Direct Debit amounts may vary because they are based on the orders processed through your Beat The Queue account and the fees that apply to those orders.

  • We aim to initiate collection around seven days after the relevant customer payment so that the payment has time to settle to you.
  • The date funds leave your account may be later because bank processing times can vary.
  • Before a collection, you will receive an email showing the amount and collection date, together with a breakdown of the orders and fees included.
  • We may combine fees from more than one order into a single collection.

Pay later and cash orders

The Direct Debit also supports orders where the customer chooses to pay later, including cash payments. No customer funds pass through Beat The Queue for these orders, so there is no online payment from which our fee can be deducted.

A platform fee may still apply because we provide and maintain the complete ordering service for the transaction. This includes processing the order, maintaining the platform, and sending customer updates by SMS and email. Any applicable fee will be included in your breakdown and collected by Direct Debit.

Payments through GoCardless

We use GoCardless to securely set up and process Direct Debit payments. Your mandate and bank payment details are handled by GoCardless and the participating banks; Beat The Queue does not store your full bank account details.

Emails about setting up or changing your mandate, upcoming collections, failed payments, or retries may be sent by GoCardless on our behalf. The name shown on your bank statement may therefore refer to GoCardless or the payment service user associated with Taste Maps Ltd.

Failed or overdue payments

You must keep an active Direct Debit mandate and ensure that sufficient funds are available when a collection is due. If a payment fails, we or GoCardless may notify you and retry the collection.

Cancelling a mandate does not cancel fees already incurred or remove your obligation to pay them. If no active mandate is available, we may ask you to pay another way or restrict the affected payment features until the outstanding amount is paid and a valid payment method is in place.

Cancellation and the Direct Debit Guarantee

You may cancel a Direct Debit at any time through your bank or building society. Please also tell us so we can confirm any outstanding balance and discuss another payment method.

Payments made under the UK Direct Debit scheme are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee. If an error is made in the setup or collection of your Direct Debit, you may be entitled to a full and immediate refund from your bank or building society.

A refund under the Guarantee does not remove a fee that was correctly due. If you receive a refund to which you are not entitled, you must repay the amount when asked.

Other terms

These Direct Debit terms form part of your agreement with Taste Maps Ltd and should be read alongside your agreed pricing, our terms of use, and our privacy policy. If there is a conflict, your specific written merchant agreement will take priority for pricing and payment arrangements.
